7 Common Text Formatting Mistakes and How to Fix Them
MiniToolBar Editorial Team•Published: 3/30/2026

Why Clean Formatting Matters
Typographical mistakes distract readers and detract from the authority of your writing. Even experienced writers and content creators frequently make these seven formatting errors:
- Double Spaces After Periods: A relic of mechanical typewriter days. Modern proportional computer fonts only require a single space after punctuation.
- Random Capitalization for Emphasis: Do not capitalize words like "Company," "Discount," or "Services" in the middle of sentences unless they are proper nouns.
- Inconsistent Headline Styles: Mixing Sentence case with Title Case across consecutive sections looks disorganized. Pick one style and stick to it.
- Leaving Trailing Whitespace: Hidden spaces at line ends cause uneven alignment in emails and code.
- Wrong Preposition Capitalization in Titles: Capitalizing words like "with," "and," and "the" inside Title Case headings violates standard style guides.
- ALL CAPS in Body Copy: Large blocks of uppercase text are difficult to read and come across as shouting. Use bold styling instead.
- Hyphen vs. En-Dash Confusion: Use standard hyphens for compound words and en-dashes with spaces for parenthetical thoughts.
