What Is a Grade Point Average (GPA)?
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is the standard numerical metric used by colleges, graduate schools, and employers to measure your overall academic performance. In the United States and many international universities, GPA is calculated on a 4.0 scale.
Standard 4.0 Letter Grade Scale Conversion
| Letter Grade | Percentage Range | Standard Grade Points |
|---|---|---|
| A / A+ | 93% – 100% | 4.0 |
| A- | 90% – 92% | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87% – 89% | 3.3 |
| B | 83% – 86% | 3.0 |
| C | 73% – 76% | 2.0 |
Weighted Credit Hours Formula
Not all courses have equal weight. A 4-credit calculus course impacts your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit elective lab.
GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours
Where: Quality Points = Grade Points × Course Credit Hours.
