Sentence Case vs. Title Case: Rules and Examples

The Two Dominant Headline Capitalization Styles
Whether you are formatting an academic research paper, an email subject line, or a blog post headline, choosing the right capitalization style establishes professionalism.
1. Title Case (Up-Style)
In Title Case, you capitalize the first word, last word, and all major words (nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs). Short grammatical conjunctions, articles, and prepositions (under four letters like a, an, the, and, but, for, in, on, at, to) remain lowercase unless they begin the title.

2. Sentence Case (Down-Style)
Sentence case treats headings just like a standard sentence: only the first word and proper nouns (names of people, countries, brands) are capitalized.
